Welcome aboard the wellness express! Everywhere I look these days there are people talking and reading about diet, exercise and positive thinking. Fantastic, I say. However, there is one key link that many people are missing, and it's an important one: it links all these things together and controls every cell, tissue and organ in your body.
‘My brain?' you ask. Well, you're close. It's your nervous system. This is what allows your brain to talk to your body and your body to talk to your brain. So, while many people are eating, thinking and moving in a healthy way, their nervous system may not be processing it healthily. This means you won't receive the full benefits.
Try this... if you're getting lots of fantastic vitamins in your healthy diet, but your nervous system supplying your gut isn't functioning properly, are you going to get the full benefit of those vitamins? Probably not. If your gut isn't getting the right messages, it may not produce the right chemicals to help you digest and absorb those nutrients.
Now, why would the nervous system stop chatting to the body? Well, stress basically. Think physical, chemical and emotional stress. For example, poor posture or a constant tension can cause a misalignment or restriction to one of the vertebrae in your spine. Left untreated, this will cause interference to your nervous system and hinder all of those well-intended lifestyle efforts you are making.
So, what is the answer? If you feel like you've been making the necessary lifestyle changes but haven't been getting the results you want to see, perhaps it's time to look to your nervous system.
What you eat, the way you exercise and even the thoughts you think can affect your nervous system. So eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and healthy fats, and be wary of the chemicals in foods and artificial sugars which can aversely affect your nerves. Get plenty of exercise, especially that which tests your balance, as the neurological feedback this creates helps your nerve function. And if you are still having trouble, get your nervous system checked by a chiropractor.
‘But I don't have pain', you say. How you feel doesn't always equate with how healthy you are. Remember that only 10 per cent of your nerves transmit pain - the other 90 per cent control everything else - so it is quite possible, even common, to have nervous system interference without pain. In fact, I often say to those that experience pain that they are the lucky ones because they know and can do something about it.
