One of the most common reasons people bring their children in to see a chiropractor is because their child is suffering from infantile colic, or just colic for short.

Colic can be described as unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours. The cause of colic is often unknown, however what we do know is that kids often deal with it better when they have a healthy spine and nervous system.
In fact, one South African study by Mercer and Cook showed that 93% of infants under chiropractic care had a complete resolution of symptoms. Another Danish study showed that 94% of parents saw improvement in their child within two weeks of beginning care.

But why would a small child have a problem with their spine (a subluxation)?

Were you present at your child's birth? What was it like? Was there force involved in assisting your child into this world? Were forceps or vacuums used? Was your child a caesarean baby? We have incredibly high rates of interventions in our births today and as a result there is often a lot of force and trauma involved even is a so-called ‘normal birth'. So much so that research says that for 80% of children, the first problem in their spine starts when they are born. Add to that intrauterine constraints, falls off the bed or couch, falls while learning to walk and even those hugs from over-enthusiastic older brothers and sisters, and it is not hard to see how a small child could end up with a subluxation.

But remember: chiropractic care is not a cure for colic, nor does a child need to have colic to benefit from care. Chiropractic care is aimed purely at adjusting the spine and ensuring there is no interference to the nervous system so that the child's body has the best chance to grow and to heal in a healthy way.
