Health experts all over the world are saying that kangaroo meat is one of the healthiest meats in the world. Kangaroo meat is lean, free range, grass-fed and organic.
Many of the animals we eat are fattened with grains. Just as excessive carbohydrates create unhealthy fat ratios in people, animals that are predominantly grain-fed also exhibit the same unhealthy fat levels. The fact that kangaroo meat is free range and grass-fed means that it has healthy fat ratios. Kangaroos also get plenty of exercise, so their meat is very lean.
This means that what little fat roo meat has is actually healthy fat, the kind of fats that your body needs for cell membrane health, hormone balance and proper neurological function. In fact it has been said that cholesterol is to the brain what calcium is to the bones.
Research has found that 40 per cent of the fat in kangaroo meat is in the form of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid molecules which are believed to improve blood flow, reduce the blood's tendency to clot, and thereby reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
They also found that kangaroo meat as part of a low fat diet can help to lower cholesterol.
Kangaroo meat is a fine textured soft meat with tender muscle fibres, virtually no fat and little connective tissue (collagen). Kangaroo meat is best served rare or medium rare rather than well done. When not overcooked and rested after cooking it is also juicy.
Dr Brett Hill's top 5 tips for choosing healthy meats:
1. Look for a meat that is organic and/or grass-fed, as excessive carb intake leads to unhealthy fat ratios.
2. Look for free range meat. Unhealthy animals produce unhealthy meats.
3. Look for lean meats that don't carry too much fat.
4. Try kangaroo meat, it is one of the healthiest options in the world.
5. Fish are another good source of essential fats. Eat smaller fish - they don't contain as many heavy metals.
