Research from the International Journal of Cancer suggests that men can lower their risk of prostate cancer by eating vegetables. More than 1,700 men were studied (with and without prostate cancer) who consumed fibre mainly from vegetable sources, and showed a decrease in their prostate cancer risk. In fact men who consumed most of their fibre from vegetables were 18 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer, whereas those who received their fibre from fruits or grains didn't show a decrease in prostate cancer risks. Obviously vegetables have many other benefits as well, including preventing heart disease, other cancers, diabetes etc.
When I tell people that I don't eat breads, processed carbs or grains, they often ask me, 'What about fibre?' The truth of the matter is that you can get all of the fibre you need by eating enough fruits and vegetables. In fact the fibre that you get from eating loads of good quality fruits and vegetables is actually much better for you, as the above study has shown.
Combine that with the fact that you don't get the negative health effects of the processed carbs and the fact that those fruits and veggies provide loads of other health benefits, and it is really a no brainer.
So eat lots of fruits and vegetables as part of your balanced diet and get your Prostate Specific Antigens levels checked when you reach 40 and you will be well on your way to reducing your prostate cancer risk. And remember, the reason to eat your veggies is not to reduce your prostate cancer risk - it is to make your body healthy. Having an appropriate weight, better performance, better moods and reduced risk of disease are all simply side effects of having a healthy body.
