Having read all of the articles in the news this week about McDonalds increasing their prices in lower socio-economic areas, and seeing people complaining about how it will be more difficult to afford their favourite meal, I could help but think... GOOD!
I know that as soon as I say that, people all over Adelaide will be shouting me down, saying ‘You don't understand', ‘It is so difficult to feed yourself cheaply nowadays', or, ‘I don't have time for anything else'. So I thought I would put these theories to the test. Firstly, I went to McDonalds to figure out how much a large Big Mac meal costs these days. I couldn't believe it when they said $7.25. I remembered that when I used to get Maccas, I would usually eat another chicken burger as well (I was a growing boy) which was another $4.45. This time, I bought a Nudie Juice instead and headed off to my favourite lunch place - the Central Markets - to seek a comparison. My rules were that it had to be takeaway, it had to be easy to eat on the run and it had to be healthy and balanced.
Here is what I found: for the same price as the Big Mac meal (well, I went 20 cents over), I got three prawn cold rolls, a cup of tea, two sesame squares, a handful of grapes, an apple, a banana and a carrot. It is a well balanced lunch, it has some protein to ensure I don't have an afternoon crash, and it is very tasty.
For those with a bigger hunger like myself (budget $11.70), you can add a handful of cashews and a peacharine, and you will come in smack-on budget. Not only will this meal be better for you, it will give you more energy for longer, it will increase your afternoon productivity, improve your digestion, improve your mood and most importantly leave you very satisfied.
Who said you can't get a healthy lunch for a healthy price?
