I was just reading in a magazine the other day that the latest "trend' is veggie patches and I was very pleased. The humble vegetable patch is good for your health in so many ways:
1. If you are growing lots of vegetables, chances are you are eating lots of vegetables and we all know that they are great for your health.
2. Home-grown food tastes fantastic so you will be even more likely to eat more fruits and veggies.
3. You have the opportunity to grow organic. Since you control the entire process you can determine what does and does not end up in your food.
4. You have an excuse to get outside and do some exercise.
5. Gardening is a great way to relax and unwind.
6. Vegetable patches are a great opportunity to teach your kids about what real food is and where it comes from. If you can teach your kids to appreciate real, fresh, home-grown and cooked food from a young age, it will stay with them for life.
7. Patience and discipline. Both of these life skills are essential if you want to grow great vegetables. Regular watering, feeding and plant care are essential to get a good crop and you will need to keep it up long enough to harvest.
So why not use this warm weather to get out in the garden and create a vegetable patch. Even if you only have space for a pot plant, why not start with some lovely fresh herbs?
