We all know that so much of our food is over-processed these days. Whether it be the chemicals in the farming, the additives and preservatives and even the containers it is kept in, our food now contains all sorts of nasties. And I use the term ‘food' loosely because some of what we eat now has very little nutritional value at all.
But sometimes all it takes to make a significant improvement in your diet is to get back to basics. There is a fantastic book that I have in my library called Changing Habits, Changing Lives by Cyndi O'Meara that talks about exactly this. Put simply, if you want it done right when it comes to your food, then it pays to do it yourself.
I know it takes time and effort to prepare a meal yourself but it's probably less than you think. You might even find you enjoy it - and the health benefits are well and truly worth it. The best part is that if you use fresh organic ingredients, you can avoid many of the nasties.
I never cease to be amazed at the quantities of salt and sugar in many of our pre-prepared and take away foods. Even if you make the exact same meal at home, I can guarantee you will use less salt and sugar if you cook it from scratch. Obviously the preservatives and additives are greatly reduced if not eliminated when you make it fresh yourself.
So I know it is old fashioned, but why not start cooking more meals at home? In fact don't just cook at home, cook at home using fresh ingredients and cook the meal from scratch.
Why do you cook or not cook at home?

I like to think I cook healthy meals - my husband has had two heart attacks - me I have chronic emphysema - so food and the correct foods are important in our household - we are both seniors - 73 and 70 years old respectively - we tossed fried food away years ago - mostly grill these days - BUT, I have just found a marvelous invention - initially expensive BUT as what cost? We have purchased a TURBO OVEN - it roasts, grills, bakes ALL without added fat. I cooked a 1.5kg chicken last night for dinner; it took exactly 38 minutes - cooked to perfection.
Have to go right now because the Turbo Oven has cooked tonights dinner
