When it comes to what to eat and what not to eat there is often a lot of conflicting information. One study tells you that it something is good for you whilst another tells you the exact opposite. Or all of the evidence points in one direction only to find out later that it was in fact not true.
This is almost certainly the case with diet soft drinks and artificial sweeteners in general. Have you been consuming diet soft drinks in the belief that they are a healthier option, or that they are going to help you keep your weight down?
Well, new research says that they do neither.
Research shows that Aspartame and MSG act as neurotransmitters in the brain. Too much of either of these causes an excessive influx of calcium into the cells, releasing free radicals that actually kill brain cells.
Other research shows that low calorie products such as diet soft drinks do not help you lose weight. In fact over 10 years ago the American Cancer Society documented the fact that persons using artificial sweeteners gain more weight than those who avoid them. Artificial sweeteners have been shown to stimulate your appetite, increase your sugar cravings and stimulate storage of fat and weight gain.
Dr Brett Hill's top 5 tips for healthy weight loss
1. Avoid artificial sweeteners. Not only are they unhealthy they will not help you lose weight.
2. Focus on what you can do to make your body healthy, rather than lose weight. If you are doing all the right things to make your body healthy you will naturally find your healthy weight.
3. Eat the foods your body is designed to eat. Focus on fruits and vegetables, healthy meats, nuts and water.
4. Get regular daily exercise; include some cardiovascular, power and resistance exercise.
5. Utilise positive affirmations to help yourself make these changes and to ensure that you are reinforcing positive habits and thought patterns. Find out more in this great book by Bruce Lipton.
