The phases of learning

StudyThere are 4 phases of any learning process.

The first of these is unconscious incompetence (you don't know what you don't know). When it comes to our health many of us reside here. Ask some people around you a simple question, what is health? and you will get a lot of shrugs and a series of I don't knows before you get anyone who gives you an answer. A lot of us are uninformed about what health is and also how to get there.

Even more of us are misinformed, we rely on information passed on to us by our parents or taught to us in school all those years ago or even worse we assume what everyone else is doing is normal. Have you had a look at the stats lately? Everyone else is pretty sick, do you really want to be doing what they are doing?

The second phase is conscious incompetence (we know we are doing it wrong). Many of us are stuck here. We know that what we are doing is right but we don't have the tools to make a change. Or perhaps we have the tools but just can't seem to make that first step. These are the people that I am trying to reach with my columns and seminars. My hope is that I can give you some information and hopefully some inspiration to help you start on your journey.

The third phase is conscious competence (you know what you need to do, and you need to keep working at it to do it). This one is probably the hardest one. You need to work at it and it takes repetition to get make it a habit. You are also likely to slip back into phase two from here. Unfortunately this is where many people give up. They consider it a failure and stop trying to make it work. In reality failing a few times in phase three is perfectly normal. It doesn't mean you can't do it, it might mean you need to do it slightly differently and it definitely means you need to keep working.

If you work at it hard enough you will eventually get to phase 4 unconscious competence. It will become an ingrained habit and you will do it right without even having to think about it. Whether it be eating right, exercising or thinking positive thoughts they will be such a regular enjoyable part of your daily routine that you will automatically do it without even having to think.

Understanding these 4 levels of learning can help you see things as they really are. A journey and a learning process that doesn't have a pass or a fail, just an ongoing strive to do better and to eventually get yourself to level 4. And the only thing stopping you from getting there is you!

So get informed, take action and keep taking action and you too can be happy and healthy.
