Defeating fear

Feel the fearFear is the guiding emotion for so many people in our society and it is terrible for your health. Not only is fear a negative thought that stimulates the release of stress hormones in your body, it can also adversely affect your health choices.

Fear tends us towards reactive health choices, and towards doing what everyone else is doing. It causes us to avoid standing out from the crowd. ‘I don't want to stand out', you say? Well the problem is that the crowd is incredibly unhealthy. As many as 80% of society is suffering from chronic disease, up to 20% of us are obese, and almost a quarter take pain relievers on a daily basis. So, do you really want to blend in with the crowd?

Wellness involves making health choices based around what you want to do, or what you would love to do, rather than around what you don't want to do, or what you are scared of. It also involves courage. After all, we don't ever really know 100% whether a health change is going to be good for us or not. If I start running more I might get fitter and healthier, or I might get an injury - and the research around what is healthy to eat and what is not seems to change on a daily basis.

But if you truly want to get healthy, you need to start making choices based around what you want to do and who you want to be, rather than making decisions out of fear.

So as Susan Jeffers says, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway!' and you will start to make decisions based on what you need to do to get healthy rather than what the crowd think you should do.
