How much of our energy in our daily life do we spend worrying about things that we can't control? All sorts of things, from a car crash on the news, to the way that someone else feels about us, to the next global recession. We worry about things that were done in the past and things that might happen in the future. We worry and worry and worry and it is making us sick.
The stress response in your body is a powerful thing. It is linked to strokes, cancers, heart disease and diabetes, and every time we worry, we switch it on. In fact if we constantly worry, it probably never switches off.
So what is the answer to all this worrying?
It is called present time consciousness. Essentially it means focusing on the job at hand. Now that doesn't mean you can't learn from past mistakes, and it doesn't mean that you can't plan for the future. What it does mean, though, is that you only focus on the past events and future hypotheticals that directly relate to the job at hand right now. You focus on the things that you can control, the things that you can influence to help make the situation better. After all, if it is not within your sphere of influence, then you are not doing anyone any good by worrying about it. You are not helping solve the problem and you are not helping your own health and wellbeing.
One of the best ways to reduce the amount you are worrying is to stop watching as much mainstream media. Our TVs, radios and newspapers are becoming more and more negative and sensationalist in their content. In fact you are much more likely to see a negative story from the other side of the world than you are to see a positive story from your very own backyard. Taking in too much mainstream media is a great way to set your mind off worrying about something you have no influence over.
So start focusing on the present and stop worrying about things you can't control. After all, you are always better off working for a solution than worrying about a problem.
