How To Eat An Elephant

Email Print PDF

The following excerpt is from my new book How To Eat An Elephant: Simple solutions for lifelong energy and vitality.

How To Eat An Elephant"So how do you eat an elephant?

Well as the saying goes, one bite at a time!

Have you ever wondered why dieting doesn't work? Or why most people let their gym memberships lapse shortly after joining? Or why that positive thinking book or seminar wears off a few weeks after you attended it?

No vaccine blackmail please

VaccinationI was very disappointed to read today that Prime Minister Julia Gillard has decided to resort to blackmail in order to try and get Australian parents to alter their informed, legal option on whether or not vaccination is the best thing to do for the health of their kids.  Does she really think that giving the impression that they are withdrawing $2100 in family benefits (as it turns out conscientious objectors can still get the benefits) is going to change people's mind about what is best for their children?

The cascade of intervention

On the back of my recent column about informed choices in healthcare I have been speaking to a number of women about birthing interventions. A number of them commented that women are often not truly informed about the risks and adverse effects of some birth interventions and that they are often put on the spot (with little information) at the time that they are most vulnerable.

Wellness: Informed choice

vaccineI was talking to a fellow chiropractor the other day who has been criticised for sharing his views on vaccination and it got me thinking. One of the most important things we can do as health care practitioners is teach people how to make an informed choice (and how can we expect them to make an informed choice if we don't share what we know?) It may seem self-evident but there are two parts to making an informed choice: 1. Getting informed, and 2. Making a choice, and I want to go into each of these in more detail.

9 steps to doing a flu well

Email Print PDF

Man-fluLike most blokes I suffer from the dreaded man-flu from time to time, in fact I just did a bit of a clean out last week. And given how rarely I actually come down with something and how mild it usually is, I am probably even more pathetic than most. But I thought you might be interested to read what I actually do when I or one of my family come down with a cold.

The first step to dealing properly with a cold is, as the old Boy Scout saying goes, ‘Be prepared'. By the time you are in the grips of the full-blown lurgy you have really missed the boat in terms of preparing your body to deal with it well.
