Healthy rewards

massageI always find it strange that people will work so hard at their diet or so hard at their exercise regime and decide they need a reward - only to have that reward undo some (if not all) of the hard work they have just done. They say to themselves, ‘I have worked really hard, I deserve this special treat'. It is especially concerning when people start doing the same thing for their kids.

Why would people think that for working so hard to get healthy, they deserve to have all that hard work undone? Even worse, why would people think it is a good idea to teach themselves and their families that junk foods or unhealthy behaviour are special treats and should be associated with rewards and fun?

Don't get me wrong: I am as prone to guilty snacks or slip-ups as anyone. The difference is, I never consider it a reward or a gift for my body. I always understand that whilst a big piece of cake isn't the end of the world, it isn't something to be celebrating either. The problem with unhealthy foods as a reward is that it teaches your body bad habits.  Your body (and your mind) will associate unhealthy choices with celebrating, being happy and feeling good. So next time you are feeling a bit down guess what is going to happen? This is true tenfold for kids.

When I really want to reward myself, I do it by finding something that I really love - often something that I don't always do or have - that is healthy, and enjoying that. By doing so I know that not only am I rewarding my good behaviour and celebrating my successes in the short term, but in the long term as well.

So next time you feel like a tasty reward, why not choose a punnet of blueberries or strawberries rather than a bag of lollies? Why not your favourite active pastime (like golf or shopping) rather than slobbing around on the couch? Why not treat yourself to a massage? You will not only enjoy the riches today, you will enjoy the benefits tomorrow as well!

p.s. stay tuned because I am currently looking at adding some recipes (including deserts) to my websites. And if you have any favourite paleo recipes feel free to send them through.
