Coffee doesn't really perk you up

Dr Brett Says: This is so true. All coffee does is set you up on a viscious cycle of energy peaks and troughs and makes it harder for you to achieve a healthy consistently high energy level.
People who wouldn't think of going through a morning without a cup of coffee usually think it helps perk them up. But surprising new research suggests that it only helps bring them back to the normal state they'd be in if they didn't drink any coffee at all.
Scientists at Britain's Bristol University had 379 people stay away from caffeine for 16 hours. About half of them normally consume moderate to heavy amounts of caffeine, the other half little or none.
After abstaining, each was given either a dose of caffeine or a placebo, then asked to rate their alertness and whether they had a headache.
The people who usually consume at least a moderate amount of caffeine and were given the placebo were more likely to report a headache and being less alert.
But the people in that group who were given caffeine didn't report being any more alert than those who normally don't consume much caffeine and were given the placebo.
The conclusion? That the more high-octane coffee drinkers don't get much of a pick-me-up from their morning latte, that caffeine just helps them avoid the effects of "acute caffeine withdrawal."
