Dr Brett Says: Take note, despite these drinks being packaged as healthy and performance enhancing they are really the exact opposite. There is no doubt that these excessive caffeine and sugar loads are bad for your health.

THE Federal Government will investigate energy drinks following calls for some of them to be banned.

The Australian Medical Association says drinks containing stimulants such as caffeine and taurine, when mixed with alcohol, were leading to pub violence and drink driving because people drinking them have "more confidence".

They want a national discussion on whether they should be available at all, or whether their use should be restricted.

Other experts have pointed out that some energy drinks available in Australia are banned overseas.

Yesterday, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said she was "keen to get some proper advice about whether the mix (of energy drinks and alcohol) was of concern", but that she would be reluctant to ban anything.

"I'm always worried about the amount of caffeine in drinks  ... if people aren't aware of their intake," she said.

Ms Roxon was in Adelaide yesterday spruiking the Federal Government's health achievements while her Cabinet colleagues met in Canberra.

During a whirlwind tour, she announced the Government would help Adelaide Unicare buy land next to the Playford North clinic in Munno Para for a teaching and training complex including a library and resource centre.

The Federal Government will contribute $4.6 million to the facility.
