What is wellness?

What is wellness? It is something that we talk about a lot but often have trouble really defining. Well, the Chiropractors Association of Australia has developed a new wellness definition to help us out. They state that …

Wellness is a lifelong process of assuming personal responsibility that empowers the individual to exercise choice, make informed decisions and take action towards a more balanced, dynamically sustainable and fulfilling existence in all dimensions of life.”

So what does this all mean?

A lifelong process: in order to be truly well, you must be well for your entire life. The sins of the past can sometimes cause damage that cannot be undone so there is no better time to start than right now.

Personal responsibility: Wellness cannot be palmed off. The only person that can make you well is you.

Exercise choice: You get to choose. You can choose to be well and you can choose to be sick. It all comes down to how you prioritise your health and what lifestyle choices you make.

Make informed decisions: You have the responsibility to be informed. Don’t rely on any one person or body to give you the information; you must source it yourself from a broad variety of places and people so that you can make a truly informed choice.

Take action: You need to follow through. You will never get and stay well in our modern world if you don’t actively pursue it. Wellness is no longer the norm.

Balanced: In order to be truly well you must address all aspects of health and wellness including what you eat, what you think, how you move and what toxins you are exposed to.

Sustainable: Wellness happens over a lifetime, not a week. Your wellness lifestyle must be one that you can maintain for the rest of your life.

Fulfilling: Your lifestyle must be one that gives you more than it costs or you won’t keep doing it. Fortunately wellness lifestyle changes always have fulfilling results if you know how to assess them properly, i.e. long term.

So how are you doing? Are you as well as you thought you were? Well if not, remember there is no better time to start!
