"Wellness is a lifelong process of assuming personal responsibility that empowers the individual to exercise choice, make informed decisions and take action towards a more balanced, dynamically sustainable and fulfilling existence in all dimensions of life" CAA (Chiropractors Association of Australia).

Many people think that being healthy is simply the absence of sickness, disease, or symptoms. According to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, health is “a state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being; the popular idea that it is merely an absence of disease and infirmity is not complete”. In fact true health, or “wellness”, is when every cell of your body is functioning at 100%, and working in perfect coordination.

If you wanted to determine how “well” you are what test would you do? A blood test? Blood pressure? How “well” you are can be difficult to determine via individual measurements and numbers. There are over 125,000 different proteins in our body and even if we could measure all of them, how would you determine what is ‘normal’ for an individual person? What about men compared with women? Children? Pregnant women? The elderly? Not to mention individual variance. Clearly a reductionist model is not a good way of determining how well we are.

Other people will attempt to judge their health according to how they feel, however this is not always accurate either. The human brain receives 300 trillion bits of information each second – yet only 50 of these are conscious thoughts, and five are indicators of how your body feels. Is making a judgement about how you feel using just five out of 300 trillion bits of information an accurate method?

The body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. It knows exactly what to do and when to do it in order to keep you healthy. Perhaps then it is not the body that is dysfunctional but the environment it is being forced to adapt to. For example, is vomiting a healthy or a sick response? Most people would say sick, but if you have ingested a toxin, vomiting is an intelligent way for your body to deal with a toxic environment.

What sort of environment are you exposing your body to each day? Are you living the life that we are genetically designed to live? Are you eating and moving as our hunter gatherer ancestors did, eating organic food, getting plenty of daily exercise and avoiding alcohol? Or are you drinking too much coffee, sitting down for long periods of time, and working in a stressful office? For maximum health and wellness, we should ensure our environment provides all the things we need, and none of the things we don’t.

If you seek good nutrition, proper exercise and quality movement, think positive thoughts and avoid toxins, you are providing an environment in which your cells can thrive. Maintain your environment, and hence your health, and you’ll add years to your life and life to your years.
